This is an integrated Spanish language and language skills module, designed to enable the students to acquire the level of subtlety in appreciating nuances and communicative contexts of a native speaker, to enhance their knowledge of a wide range of linguistic usages and structures and their ability to make use of them in accordance with the intention of the speakers, the linguistic and extra-linguistic contexts or the relationship or status of the speakers at a higher level. There will be one 1-hour weekly tutorial during which language tutors will provide supervision, linguistic guidance and feedback in relation to team (Semester 1) and individual assessed projects (Semester 2) and well-structured opportunities for oral practice on the topics being covered by the students' projects. Oral work during tutorials in Semester 1 will concentrate on class-wide discussion around the sources chosen for the team projects and debates around key issues relating to team projects, both in relation to their content and their form. There will be some debates during Semester 1 which will continue during tutorials in Semester 2 will occupy 90% of the contact time in the classroom, as each student will have to present a topic in relation to their own project followed by discussion.
At the end of this module students will be able to:
- understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning;
- express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions;
- use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes;
- produce clear, well-structured, detailed texts on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
Students will gain knowledge on Spanish Grammar at the C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and will acquire a level of discursive, lexical and functional competence which will allow them to communicate in professional situations both in writing and orally.
Alongside the enhancement of the four basic language skills (listening, reading, speaking and writing) students will gain competence in the following transferable skills:
Ability to:
- appreciate and use nuanced language at a higher level;
- appreciate and use at a higher level tone, register, structure and style in oral and written communication;
- interact and negotiate orally in complex situations.
Students will have two contact hours a week of language teaching in a large group, supported with online exercises, during which the following grammar and stylistic points will be covered in depth:
-rhetorical modes and genres;
-adequacy, coherence and cohesion;
-relative, conditional, temporal, concessive, final, reason, result, modal, comparative subordinate clauses;
-reported speech;
-the expression of impersonality;
-infinitive, gerund and participle;
-verbal periphrasis;

Additionally, oral-classes will be provided for extra practice through the Club de Conversación.

In semester 1 there will be non-assessed discussions about the sources and topics of the team projects and mock presentations/ debates of draft projects in which the whole class - max 8 - will take part.
